บทคัดย่อ
การค้นพบและการขุดค้นแหล่งโบราณคดีก่อนประวัติศาสตร์จำนวนมากในภาคเหนือและภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศไทยในทศวรรษ 1960 ถึงกลางทศวรรษ 1970 นั้น แหล่งโบราณคดีที่เป็นที่รู้จักกันเป็นอย่างดีที่สุดแหล่งหนึ่งคือมรดกโลกบ้านเชียง ถือเป็นความก้าวหน้าที่สำคัญในวงการโบราณคดีเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ หลักฐานเกี่ยวกับจารีตยุคสำริดที่พัฒนาขึ้นด้วยตนเองขัดแย้งกับทัศนะของปัญญาชนอาณานิคมที่มองเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ในฐานะพื้นที่ด้อยทางวัฒนธรรม ที่พัฒนาก้าวหน้าขึ้นได้ด้วยการเป็นผู้รับเอาวัฒนธรรมจากอินเดียและจีน ต่อมาค่าอายุเดิม ของบ้านเชียง ซึ่งแม้จะได้รับการปฏิเสธในภายหลัง แต่ก็ได้ทำให้ในสมัยหนึ่งบ้านเชียงกลายเป็นศูนย์กลางของการถกเถียงในระดับสากลเกี่ยวกับต้นกำเนิดของยุคโลหะโลก การศึกษาโบราณคดีโดยมุ่งเน้นประเด็นเรื่องรูปแบบและลำดับพัฒนาการของโบราณวัตถุนั้นอำพรางความจริงที่ว่านักโบราณคดีอเมริกันสำรวจและขุดค้นแหล่งโบราณคดีในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศไทย ณ ช่วงเวลาที่ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือถูกดึงเข้าสู่ยุทธศาสตร์สงครามในฐานะพื้นที่สนับสนุนยุทธปัจจัยสำหรับแนวหน้าในสงครามเวียดนาม บทความนี้จึงพินิจพิจารณาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการผลิตความรู้ทางโบราณคดีเกี่ยวกับยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ของเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้โดยสหรัฐอเมริกา กับการเมืองสงครามเย็น โดยเจาะจงไปที่ภาวะความสัมพันธ์แบบพึ่งพิงที่ประเทศไทยมีต่อสหรัฐอเมริกาภายใต้ลัทธิอาณานิคมแผนใหม่
