Thai State and Regulations of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy, 1950-1975

Abstract
This research article studies the role of government in the Kingdom of Thailand through the Sale of Drug Act B.E. 2493 (1950) and the Drugs Act, B.E. 2510 (1967) as implemented by the Drug Committee in regulating Chinese medicine and the pharmaceutical business. As Chinese medicine acquired a large market share due to widespread use in Thailand, the government assumed control of the trade to bolster public health and consumer safety. This study found that the amount of Chinese medicine in Thailand, domestically produced and imported from overseas, was so abundant that it was specifically categorized as foreign traditional medicine. However, traditional Chinese medicine has never been approved by the Ministry of Health, causing problems in the registration of Chinese medicine because the Ministry of Health has no experts, and seeks advice from outsiders.
