บทคัดย่อ
บทความวิจัยชิ้นนี้ทำการศึกษาแนวคิดความเป็นทรราชตะวันออก (Oriental Despotism) ที่ถูกนำมาใช้ในการอธิบายการเมืองการปกครองและรัฐบาลสยามในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้นผ่านงานเขียนของชาวตะวันตกที่เดินทางมายังสยามในช่วงเวลาดังกล่าว บทความวิจัยนี้ชี้ให้เห็นว่า งานเขียนของชาวตะวันตกที่เดินทางมายังสยามในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น ไม่เพียงแต่บันทึกประสบการณ์เชิงประจักษ์ของผู้เขียนเท่านั้น หากแต่ยังสอดแทรกและผลิตซ้ำแนวคิดความเป็นทรราชตะวันออก อันเป็นแนวคิดที่สืบทอดมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรีกโบราณ และถูกนำมาอธิบายอย่างเป็นระบบในผลงาน The Spirit of the Laws (1748) ของมงแตสกีเยอ โดยความเป็นทรราชตะวันออกของสยามที่ปรากฏในงานเขียนของชาวตะวันตกถูกนำเสนอในสองบริบทด้วยกัน ได้แก่ ความเป็นทรราชที่ปรากฏในพื้นที่สาธารณะ จากการสร้างคำอธิบายต่อการเมืองการปกครองและรัฐบาลของสยามว่าผู้ปกครองมีอำนาจเบ็ดเสร็จ ปกครองประชาชนด้วยความหวาดกลัว และความเป็นทรราชในพื้นที่ส่วนตัวของผู้ปกครอง ถูกนำเสนอว่าเป็นพื้นที่ที่จำกัดอิสรภาพของสตรีและเต็มไปด้วยการกดขี่ข่มเหงตามอำเภอใจของผู้ปกครอง การนำเสนอภาพของสยามในลักษณะนี้จึงเป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญของชาติตะวันตกในการจัดวางตำแหน่งแห่งที่ของสยามในฐานะดินแดนที่มีความด้อยกว่าตะวันตกอย่างชัดเจนในบริบทของลัทธิจักรวรรดินิยมในศตวรรษที่ 19
