Abstract

A survey research on the development of concepts of world history and global history that could be brought to use within the contexts of Thai education and academicians. Research result reveals that meaning and significance of “world history” have evolved inseparably from the historiographical development of the concepts of world history. The starting point was from the trace within the first history work in Hellenic Greek; later, followed by Christian historiography portraying world history under the Divine Providence, the early modern world until the move toward secularization during the Enlightenment, the birth of the history profession in the 19th century limiting space/area framework for historical studies, consequences of the world wars leading to the writing of philosophical world history and peace history of the world, historical process and the development of social science theories, professional historians and world history in late 20th century, and history of globalization or global history. The paper sums up with the contribution of learning world history/global history to the study of history in Thailand.
