Racial Harmony and Tunku Abdul Rahman’s Approach to Malaysian Nation-Building, 1951-1957

Abstract
Racial con icts among Malays, Chinese, and Indian peo- ple in Malaya were one of historical outcome of British and Jap- anese colonialism. Before Malaya gained independence, the British government demanded racial harmony in the country. Tunku Abdul Rahman (1908-1990), the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, brought up leaders of three races into the Alliance party.These leaders were from the United Malays National Orga- nization (UMNO); Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA); and Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC). He thought that this gathering would be the first step to resolve racial con icts after Malayan independence. This article examines how Tunku Abdul Rahman created a Malayan nation and what Tunku Abdul Rahman thought about building racial harmony among Malays, Chinese, and In- dians before independence.
