The 2015-2016 European Migrant Crisis: The European Union in a “race against time” to save the “Schengen Area”
Main Article Content
Abstract
In 2015-2016 an enormous and unprecedented wave of migrants came to the EU in an attempt to apply for asylum. National migrant-reception and asylum systems in many member states reached a breaking point. The situation quickly revealed the deficiencies of the existing Common European Asylum System and the EU failed to come up with a rapid and effective solution. Many countries opt to national measures, in particular, border controls or fences, to contain the flow of migrants. By doing so they effectively abandoned part of the Schengen Agreement, i.e. removing internal border controls in favor of freedom of movement within the European single market. The migrant crisis thus threatened Schengen with far-reaching implications.
