A History of Islamic Law in Aceh: From Sultanate to Special Autonomy
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research paper examines the history of Islamic law in Aceh from the sultanate era to the present day. An historical approach was used in order to study the changes of the application of Islamic law which relates to the social and political contexts between Aceh and external powers from the past to present. This paper consults various documents and legal texts and their implementation in the province. The study finds that Islamic law has historically always been used in Aceh applied at different levels and degrees of formality. After the New Order era, Islamic law was officially implemented in Aceh. However, it has been used as a political tool both between the Indonesian government and the Aceh Independence Movement (GAM) and among various power groups in Aceh itself.
