The Migrants’ Affairs: Love, Longing, and Loneliness in Bangkok’s Economic Miracle, the 1980s-1990s

Abstract
This article examines the pursuit of love and emotional management among provincial women and men who migrated to Bangkok between the 1970s and 1980s by looking at the narratives of love experiences published in Khu Sang Khu Som magazine. This publication offered a window into concepts of love, affective relationships, and sexuality of its audience who mainly came from provincial backgrounds. This article studies the use of emotion words in personal accounts of romantic experiences, and explores the emotions, attitudes, and cultural norms towards love that shaped the migrants’ emotional community. This article argues that the socio-economic transformations of Bangkok during this period re-configured the migrants’ concept of love. While these migrants arrived in the city with hopes and aspirations, they often faced loneliness and isolation. Love thus emerged as a crucial mechanism for emotional management and coping with the wretched urban life. The popular narratives of loneliness, longing and romantic fantasies of finding true love in printed media suggested that these migrants perceived urban isolation as a form of emotional distress. For them, love and intimacy formed an essential tool for consolation and emotional survival. The metropolis played a pivotal role in constructing the new meaning of love in this emotional community inhabited by provincial men and women in the age of the economic miracle.
