“Killing a Chicken to Scare the Monkeys”: The Thai State’s Annihilation of its Enemies

Abstract
A violent incident that occurred in the middle of Bangkok in late 2013 resulted in a near-death injury of a taxi driver. This article takes this incident as a departure point to the broader analysis of structural violence in the Thai society. “Killing a Chicken to Scare the Monkeys” is a Thai proverb meaning to prosecute a person to set an example so that others will fear and not dare to follow. This article will rework the concept of the Theatre State and, with the support from findings in neuroscience, will argue that the Thai state internalizes the culture of “Killing a Chicken to Scare the Monkeys” to maintain order according to the Thai Theravada Buddhist cosmology. Essentially, this process has the technology enacting the central role and without which, metaphorically speaking, the killing of chicken would not have been completed. This article will illustrate the structural violence in the Thai society through the use of the draconian Article 17 that played out by the technology of newspapers during the 1970s.
