THE RITUAL OF SIANG NAHM IN LAKHON PHANTHANG PHRA LOR

Abstract

This academic article aimed to study the ritual of Siang Nahm in Lakhon Phanthang Phra Lor written by his Royal Highness Prince Narathip Praphanphong using the pattern of performance by Lamoon Yamakup. The author studied relevant documents and literature such as Lilit Phra Lor, Lakhon Phanthang Phra Lor written by His Royal Highness Prince Narathip Praphanphong and conducted an interview with those involved. The findings from studying the ritual of Siang Nahm in the chapter of Phra Lor drama reveal that ritual elements of Siang Nahm in the performance included the followings; 1) Phra Lor dressed in white, 2) Flowers used to worship the sacred things, 3) The song Sa Tu Karn in the performance representing the sacred worship, 4) The dance showing the worship of holy things. It was also found that Siang Nahm comprised four ritual steps 1) Bring flowers to worship the sacred things in all four directions along with a dance and the song Sa Tu Karn, 2) Make a wish, 3) Put the flowers on water, 4) Know the result by observing the circulation of water. The result shows that the water flowed irregularly and was red like blood. This bad luck sign was believed to bring the misfortune.
