KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PLAY RADEN LANDAI

Abstract

This academic article aims to present the prominent characteristics of Raden Landai. The study reveals that the Raden Landai drama script comprises 402 poems, 11 Na Phat songs, and 7 sung pieces. Its content is a parodic adaptation of Inao. The poems exhibit a harmonious use of language and a concise literary style, while the plot distinguishes itself from other plays.Moreover, the study highlights certain beliefs prevalent among the people of that era, such as folklore beliefs in ghosts, eye twitching, and geckos. The social conditions during the early Rattanakosin era were influenced by both Buddhism and Brahmanism. While Buddhism and the concept of merit were deeply respected, traditional superstitions rooted in Brahmanism remained widespread. These aspects reflect the unique characteristics of Thai society during the early Rattanakosin period and occasionally reveal the author's personal convictions.

In terms of its significance and role, Raden Landai is notable for its linguistic artistry and serves as a medium for educating audiences about societal values. Additionally, it functions as a literary work intended for parody.
