THE MUSICAL COMPOSITION OF SAW SAM SOLO: PHAYA TRUK SAM CHAN

Abstract

        This academic article aims to present the musical composition of Phaya Truk Sam Chan for Saw Sam Sai solo to be used in the Saw Sam Sai competition of the College of Music, Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University in 2024. The song “Phaya Truk” is the fourth order in a set of Phleng Reung Phaya Soke which includes six songs: Phaya Fun, Phaya Sok Tai, Phaya Soke, Phaya Truk, Phaya Ramphueng, and Phaya Khruan. The song “Phaya Truk” is four Nathab Probkai in length and mainly uses Sol scale for creating a melody. The composition was proceeded by examining the main melody, tones, and directions of melodic movement, followed by sketching a rough single melody, and adding details. The inspiration was taken from Saw Sam Sai solo of Phaya Soke song composed by Luang Phairo Siang Saw (Aun Durayacheewin) both in terms of song expressions and the process of playing with clarity. The techniques of Phrom Pit (closed-fingering-trill) and Phrom Pued (open fingering-trill), which are not too fast, were used along with the repeated lyrics to express the emotion of rethinking like the song name: Truk Nuk as clearly seen in lines 2-4 and 7 of the song. Then the detail was added, and the melody was decorated to be more beautifully. The melody appeared in "Oad" and "Phan" phrases, using different features including verses (Klon Fark, Klon Pan), sounds up and down, repeated expressions. Various composing tools were also employed in playing such as Eaan Siang, Krathop Siang (conjugate the sound), Rood New (glissando up, glissando down), Phrom, Kanchak Sa Euk (hiccups), and Cha-ngak Kanchak
