Factors Influencing Human Resource Management in Bangkok Hotel Business During the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic

Abstract

The objectives of this research were 1) to study the human resource management environment in the hotel business and 2) to provide guidelines for human resource management in the hotel business in Bangkok during the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This research employed a mixed-methods approach by collecting quantitative data from 100 participants and conducting in-depth interviews with 10 participants. The results were as follows: 1) Human resource management of hotel business in Bangkok was overall at a high level in areas of performance appraisal, recruiting and selection, training, and development respectively; 2) guidelines for human resource management of hotel business in Bangkok were overall at a high level in areas of performance appraisal, recruiting and selection, compensation, and welfare respectively; and 3) with regards to the human resource management environment of the hotel business, the strengths were that there was support for employees to promote career advancement and there were good human resource management strategies as well as profitable welfare strategies. The weaknesses were ineffective communication, a lack of good English language skills and third language skills, as well as a high staff turnover rate. For opportunities, during the 2019 Corona virus disease epidemic, every hotel had to adjust its strategies for increasing revenues to be able to take care of personnel in its organization. The threats were that during the 2019 Corona virus disease epidemic, the hotel's revenue would decline. Then there was a need to reduce the wage rate and reduce employment for the hotel to survive.
