Main Article Content
Abstract
The study "Developing Employment Program for New Homeless in Bangkok" aimed to study, analyze, and propose skill development and employment program guidelines for new homeless in Bangkok, as well as study factors affecting new homeless’ decision to get back to work. The research methodology used in this study was a qualitative approach, which involves designing a semi-structured interview based on document research and conducting in-depth interviews with 17 people chosen by purposive sampling and divided into 4 groups of key informants, namely, representatives from the post-homeless population, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, and educational institutions. The data from the interview were transcribed, analyzed, and synthesized into potential themes using a content and thematic analysis approach. As a result, the finding showed that the internal factors affecting the new homeless’ decision to get back to work include family support, physical and mental readiness, attitude, and age. While external factors included public attitudes toward the homeless and work-related supports such as financial and non-financial welfare. For skill development, there are 2 categories of skill sets for the homeless, namely: life skills and work-based skills. The study found that the most effective training methods for the homeless are on-the-job training and mentoring. According to the study, the recommendations for developing an employment program for the new homeless in Bangkok are to focus on surveying their needs holistically and to provide shelter or temporary housing, training, employment, and job retention.
