Adaptive Leadership to Enhance Work Management in the Disruptive World

The world is now entering the era of disruptive world comprising 4 elements: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. This era has created an impact to work management of public and private organizations including administrative planning, administrative procedure, human resource management, and financial management, which are mainly responsible by organization’s executive team from chief of staff level. Executive teams, therefore, need to cultivate themselves to be adaptive leadership to embrace the disruptive world. This paper aims to elaborate the model of adaptive leadership that consists of 6 components of change management process: 1) Big picture or Get on the Balcony, 2) Identify Adaptive Challenge, 3) Regulate Distress, 4) Maintain Disciplined Attention, 5) Give the Work Back to the People, and 6) Protect Leadership from Below. This could be applied as a good strategy to support organizational management in this disruptive world. The strategy includes the following elements 1) having vision, 2) understanding uncertainty, 3) enabling to find clarity in complex situation, and 4) embracing agility in dealing with ambiguity.
