The content and legal correction of advertising food supplements and medications from radio in Banmakok community, Maha Sarakham Province

Abstract

Objective: To assess the legal correction of the radio advertising about food supplements and medications from the radio stations that Banmakok people was able to access. Methods: The descriptive study, data was collected by tape recording the content of advertisement that broadcasting from 6 radio stations in Banmakok community. Advertisement was recorded every day for a month during October-November 2011. Every Wednesday and Friday was the representative of the regular working days, and every Sunday for the holiday. We recorded all advertisements from the first time of daily broadcasting until the radio station was closed. The content and legal correction of advertising was evaluated by 3 experts. Results: From the radio record, 100 advertisements were observed, 74 medications and 26 food supplements advertisement. They were broadcasted in both the regular working day and holiday. Spot radio was the type most often broadcasted (62%) comparing with other advertisement types. Regarding to the related laws, all content of medication and food supplement advertisement was incorrect. Six significant factors affecting to the illegal statements of the advertisement were private radio station, FM channel, broadcasting on holiday, evening time, more than 2 minutes of advertisement, and type of advertisement. Conclusion: There were many patterns of food supplement and medication advertisement from radio. They were disseminated to Banmakok people every day, more than 2 minutes/advertisement and more than 4 times/day but all of their content was in violation of law according to the related laws.
