Abstract

This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to assess caregiver stress and examine associations between predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors, along with characteristics of dependent elderly. A total of 204 family caregivers were surveyed using self-administered questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression (p < 0.05).

The study found that 22.5% of caregivers experienced high levels of stress, with 91.2% reporting exhaustion and 88.3% experiencing pressure from continuous. Key factors significantly associated with higher caregiver stress included insufficient income, longer caregiving hours per day, limited access to healthcare services, facilities, and welfare, inadequate information support, and low levels of support from family, community, multidisciplinary teams, and governmental agencies, the level of dependency and the number of chronic conditions in care recipients.

The findings underscore the need to alleviate caregivers’ economic burdens, expand the professional caregiver workforce, and reduce caregiving hours. Strengthening access to healthcare services and welfare services, enhancing information dissemination, and promoting family and community support systems are essential. Providing mentorship for skill development and promoting health literacy are essential. Promoting regular health screenings can effectively reduce non-communicable disease risks and prevent future dependency. These integrated measures aim to reduce caregiver stress, improve quality of life, and lay the foundation for a sustainable long-term care system for dependent elderly.
