Maintaining the nursing workforce in hospitals is a challenge to human resources management. This descriptive cross-sectional study, the objectives of this study were identified the level of intension to stay and investigated the factors associated with the registered nurses’ intension to stay in a university hospital. A sample of 372 registered nurses (96.62%) with at least one year of work experience was selected using a stratified random sampling method. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. The data analysis was using descriptive statistics, including percentages, means, and standard deviations, as well as inferential statistics, such as Spearman’s correlation analysis, Chi-square analysis and Pearson correlation analysis to examine associations.
Results :
The study found that the intention to stay among the nurses was at a moderate level (Mean = 3.08±1.09). Age, income, marital status, education level, work experience and weekly working hours were significantly associated with the intention to stay in the registered nurses (p-value < 0.05). Happiness at work showed a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.42, p-value < 0.001).
The results of this study provide empirical evidence for nursing administrators to use in planning, improving operational practices, and developing guidelines for retain personnel within the organization.
