The purpose of this research was to study water
use and to develop equations for water demand
prediction for the hotel and tourism business in Patong,
Phuket. The samples were specifically selected and
consisted of 27 hotels, 51 restaurants and 24 pubs and
bars. Interview questionnaires were used to collect
information from each types of tourism business.
Monthly water consumption data in 2012 from the
Provincial Waterworks Authority, Phuket were retrieved
and computed for the average water consumption rate.
The results were: hotels = 563.69 liters of water/room/
day; restaurant = 26.33 liters/sqm/day; and pub and bar
= 32.67 liters/sqm/day. Equations for water demand
forecast were constructed using stepwise multiple
regression analysis. The equations are: Hotel =
0.83(number of rooms sold) + 884.86(tourist season) -
769.86; Restaurant = 2.85(number of tables) -
1.83(number of operating hours/day) + 40.66 and Pub
and bar = 48.66(type of food/drink offered) + 1.33(number
of employees) + 0.47(number of chairs) - 0.08(number
of customers per day) - 17.81. Pearson’s correlation
coefficients for the equations were 0.89, 0.78, and 0.81,
respectively. The result of the study can be applied to
manage water resource management to meet the growth
of tourism industry in the future.
