Abstract

This abstract presents 1) the social and cultural context of Karen Baptists in Muang District, Chiang Mai Province and 2) the processes that cause changes in the music culture of the Karen Baptists in Muang District, Chiang Mai Province. The methodology used is qualitative according to musicology and ethnomusicology theory. The information gathered is historical and comes from documents, while field information was gathered using formal and informal interviews from individuals in 3 groups amounting to a total of 5 individuals including 1 academic, 2 church leaders, and 2 musicians, with the locations being studied including Tannamtip Church, Sangprateep Church, and the Karen Baptists Convention of Thailand.

The results of the study found that 1) Karen Baptists started practicing Christianity of the American Baptist Protestant sect by being influenced by missionaries from Burma and the entry of American missionaries to Chiang Mai from 1868 onwards, resulting in the creation of a Karen Baptist community in the North of Thailand by around the year 1881. This Karen Baptist group mixed and mingled Protestant Christian practices with their own practices. 2) In studying the processes causing changes in the music culture, it was discovered that music in Christianity had an impact on Karen culture, with the important factors involved including processes of inculcation and persuasion. Said factors are embedded in the schools, traditions, festivals, culture, and way-of-life and other types of musical activities. Karen Baptists develop their music culture in a way that coincides with the local social developments, and this can evaluated by observing the types of music, the ways music is used, and the support being given to music culture, including the passing-on of said culture and the maintenance of Karen identity under the purview of the way-of-life of Karen Baptists.
