Using Animated Cartoons to Develop English Speaking Ability and Attitudes Among Ethnic Students

Abstract
The purposes of this research were to study the English speaking ability of students after they were taught
through animated cartoons and to compare the attitudes toward English learning of the students both before
and after they were taught through animated cartoons. The target group was 25 PrathomSuksa 6/1 ethnic
students;Lahu, Lawa and Kachin who studied a fundamental English course in the first semester of the
academic year 2016 at Baan Nongkhiew School, Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai Province. The instruments
used in the research consisted of 5 episodes ofanimated cartoons, 5 animated cartoons lesson plans, an
English speaking ability assessment form and an attitude evaluation form. The data were analyzed by mean,
standard deviation and percentage.
The research findings were as follows:
1. The English speaking ability of the students who were taught through animated cartoons increased
their knowledge of 74.60 percent passing the assigned criteria at a good level.
2. The students’ attitudes toward English learning through animated cartoonswas rated at a high level.
