บทคัดย่อ
บทความนี้มุ่งศึกษาแนวคิดจริยธรรมสิ่งแวดล้อมในแบบเรียนภาษาไทย เรื่อง นกกางเขน เรียบเรียงโดยหลวงกีรติวิทโยราฬ และนายอร่าม สิทธิสาริบุตร ซึงเป็นแบบเรียนเก่าตีพิมพ์ครั้งแรกเมื่อ ปี พ.ศ. 2482 และกรมวิชาการกระทรวงธรรมการในเวลานั้น
กำหนดให้เป็นหนังสืออ่านสำหรับนักเรียนชั้นประถมปีที่ 2 แบบเรียนเรื่องขอองนกกางเขน เล่าเรื่องครอบครัวของนกกางเขนทีประสบชะตากรรมเพราะนำมือของมนุษย์ ไม่เพียงแต่เป็นวรรณกรรมแบบเรียนที่อยู่ในความทรงจำของผู้อ่านด้วยเนื้อเรื่องที่น่าประทับใจ แต่ยังได้
นำเสนอแนวคิดเรื่องจริยธรรมสิ่งแวดล้อมใหกั้บเด็กและเยาวชนอย่างแยบยล ถือว่าเป็นประเด็นที่มีความก้าวหน้าเป็นอย่างยิ่งสำหรับสังคมไทยในเวลานั้นที่ยังไม่ค่อยมีความตื่นตัวในเรื่องของจิตสำนึกด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม ผู้แต่งชี้ให้เห็นว่ามนุษย์คือตัวการสำคัญใน
การเบียดเบียนรังแกสัตว์ ดังนั้นจึงควรปฏิบัติต่อสัตว์ด้วยความเมตตากรุณา เพราะสัตว์ก็มีความรู สึกเหมือนคนซึ่งงสอดคล้องกับแนวคิดจริยธรรมสิ่งแวดล้อมในวงวิชาการตะวันตก ทีเกิดขึ้นหลังจากการแต่งหนังสือเรียนเรื่องของนกกางเขนนี้ถึงสามทศวรรษ
