Livelihood Adaptation of Rubber Planters in Songkhla Province under Price Fluctuation

Abstract

The objective of this article was to investigate livelihood adaptation of rubber planters in Ban Wang Pha Community, Thung Tam Sao Sub-district, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province under price fluctuations.  Structured interview questions, participant and non-participant observations, and focus group discussions were used as instruments to collect data from the field in addition to data collected from related documents and research reports.  Primary key informants were 30 household heads of rubber planters in Ban Wang Pha Community, Thung Tam Sao Sub-district, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, and secondary key informants were hired rubber planters who did not own the rubber plantations, community leaders, core leaders of rubber farmers and rubber institutions totaling 10 informants. Content analysis was performed with the data and descriptive analysis was used for report writing. 
The data were validated with triangulation technique.


            The study found that livelihood adaptations of rubber planters in Ban Wang Pha Community, Thung Tam Sao Sub-district, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province under price fluctuations were changes in productions and marketing, from mining to rubber planting, and from producing raw rubber sheets to fresh rubber latex.  Rubber fund cooperatives were used as a strategy for livelihood, and diversity was made to increase livelihood capabilities.
