The Emergence of Thai Restaurants in Kunming During the Socialist Era 1993-2000

Abstract
This research aims to: 1) study the expansion of Thai restaurant entrepreneurs in Kunming, especially during the years 1993-2000, and 2) examine the impacts and adaptations of Thai restaurant entrepreneurs in Kunming during this period. Using qualitative research methods, the key informants included Thai restaurant entrepreneurs in Kunming and their customers. Research tools included in-depth interviews and documentary research. Data were analyzed inductively and presented in a descriptive analysis format to thoroughly explain and summarize the research findings.
The research findings indicate that: 1) the expansion of Thai restaurant entrepreneurs in Kunming was influenced by government policies, market opening, and foreign investment, and 2) Thai restaurant entrepreneurs adapted to meet the demands and consumption behaviors of Chinese customers by improving menus and services, and by using local ingredients.
