The purpose of this study was to 1) investigate problems in English writing of new-entry students from
Prince of Songkla University Trang Campus; 2) find out ways to improve students’ writing skills; and 3) to
provide recommendations for the improvements of the preparatory project. The participants were 62
new-entry students. Data was gathered from the students’ writing worksheets and analyzed using the thematic
analysis approach. The findings showed that the students had competence in routine textbook-style exercises.
However, the analysis of their original writing indicates significant deficiencies in their English skills, which
were categorized in four key areas: sentence structure deficit, grammatical errors, wording inappropriacy,
and lack of sentence holistic meaning. These shortfalls reflect the strong influence of L1 on L2, and reveal a
call for student needs analysis. Strategies for improving students’ writing skills are proposed and ways to
improve the preparatory project are discussed. Recommendations in terms of pedagogy and curriculum are
also offered to both teachers and university administrators.
