Sustainable Energy Transition in the Middle East : Lessons and Opportunities
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines the current status and key lessons of the sustainable energy transition in the Middle East, considering the experiences of regional leaders, namely the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Jordan, and Israel. By analyzing success factors such as ambitious target-setting, investments in infrastructure and technology, promotion of research and development, and stakeholder engagement, the article identifies best practices for driving the energy transition. It also explores how these lessons can be applied across the diverse contexts of countries in the region, at various levels ranging from national to household, taking into account challenges such as dependence on fossil fuel revenues, financial and technological constraints, as well as opportunities like vast renewable energy potential and favorable market trends. Ultimately, the article emphasizes the importance of regional and international cooperation in accelerating the energy transition and cementing the Middle East's leadership role in advancing a sustainable and inclusive low-carbon economy.
