Tobacco is a highly addictive substance, especially among curious teenagers. This descriptive correlational research aims to describe the factors related to health literacy about tobacco and to prevent smoking among students. The samples were 400 students in the University, Bangkok metropolis. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to randomize the sample. Data collection by questionnaire consisted of general information, history of smoking, and health literacy (Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.95 and content validity index was CVI = 1.00, 1.00 and 0.93). Descriptive statistic, Spearman Rank-Order Correlation Coefficient and Eta coefficient were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that factors that positively correlated with the health literacy about tobacco and preventive smoking were gender (η =.288, p = .010), the faculty of study (η =.392, p = <.001), the cumulative GPA (r = .226, p = <.001) and smoking behavior of students (η = 338, p = .001). In sum, the results of this study suggest that health literacy about tobacco prevent smoking. Educational institutions should promote health literacy for students, as well as provide activities for students to recognize the dangerous effects of tobacco on health. They should encourage students to avoid smoking to begin with, and successfully quit smoking if they have started.References
