The Study of Potentials for Learning Chinese Vocabulary and Chinese Language Proficiency of Chinese Major Students at Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin

The research aimed: 1 ) to study the potential for learning the Chinese vocabulary of Chinese major students; 2) to study the Chinese language proficiency of Chinese major students; 3) to study the relationship between the extent of the vocabulary and the Chinese language proficiency of Chinese major students; 4) to study problems associated with the Chinese language learning ability of students. The purposively selected research sample consisted of 65 Rattanakosin Chinese major undergraduate students in their third and fourth years at Rajamangala University of Technology. The corpus was collected through two questionnaires. The questionnaire of texting vocabulary was based on a text paradigm put forward by the Nation, and the other was the random samples of new HSK (level 4 and level 5). The research data were analyzed using score mean, percentage, standard deviation, and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient.
The main research findings were as follows: 1 ) the average vocabulary extent of grade three undergraduates was 1,542, while grade four was 1,864, and the average vocabulary extent of the two grades was just 1,715. Third and fourth year students were considered to be at an experienced level, but the vocabulary was still very low; 2) In the aspects of Chinese language proficiency, the writing score was higher than other parts, and the lowest score was reading; 3 ) the correlation coefficients between the vocabulary size and the Chinese language proficiency of students suggested that the level of reading ability, listening ability, writing ability, and vocabulary size were related at the statistical significance level of 0.01; 4) the study analyzed students’ problems in learning Chinese vocabulary, and the research findings were: 1) the problem in Chinese vocabulary was related to the structure of the Chinese curriculum in Thailand, methods of teaching, and Chinese textbooks; 2) the problem with Chinese language proficiency was associated with the potential vocabulary. The results of this study will be helpful to lecturers or work in teaching, reference, and instructional development.
