Abstract

The dissertation, entitled “The Study of the Roles and Political Communication of Pol.Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen During B.E. 2521 to 2560”, has two objectives: (1) to study the political contexts that contributed to the roles and political communication of Pol.Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen from B.E. 2521 to 2560 ; and (2) to analyse his roles and political communication process during the said period. This is a qualitative research, focusing on analyzing the political communication competence of Pol.Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen under the political communication theoretical framework of David K. Berlo. The research techniques employed are in-depth interviews as well as content analysis of texts from different sources. It was found that changes in the Thai political contexts from B.E. 2521 to 2560 contributed significantly in promoting the roles and political communication of Pol.Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen. With regards to the political communication process, as a man of integrity, justice and with positive attitudes towards himself and his career, Pol. Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen, has proven to be well-versed in political communication competence and skills. Although the ‘messages’ he delivered to the public varied owing to the different roles he played, they were ,on a whole, meant for positive images. This was because the communication was intensively and successively done through all media channels to reach the targeted ‘message receivers’: the urban middle-class, the grassroots and the Thai public in general.
