Correlation Correlation Between Self-esteem and Social Adjustment of Students at Phranakorn Rajabhat University

The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to describe the self-esteem and the correlation between self-esteem and social adjustment among students of Phranakorn Rajabhat University. Four hundred and two undergraduate students answered the questionnaires. The research instruments were demographic questionnaire which adapted from The Coopersmith Self-Esteem (CSEI) and Social Adjustment Questionnaire, adapted from The Social Adjustment Scale – Self Report (SAS-SR) by Siriwan Taweewattanaprecha. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, independence t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis.
The results showed mean and SD regarding the self-esteem score was 29.49 and 7.31 respectively. When using percentile to set the level of low self-esteem, 7.25 percent of the group was defined good to very good self-esteem. Factors contributing to a healthy self-esteem with the significant at p < 0.05 were gender, GPAX, Factors associated with decreased self-esteem were gender (female) and very closed relationship between father and mother. Mean score and SD regarding the Social adjustment score were 35.82 and 8.02 respectively. When using percentile to set the level of social adjustment, 53.62 percent of group showed good to very good social adjustment. Factors associated with increased social adjustment were conflict relationship between their father and mother and income. The research results also found the correlation between self-esteem and social adjustment in linear function. High self-esteem can predict good social adjustment. The result from this study may be generalized as the guide to develop a program to enhance self-esteem and social adjustment for undergraduate students.
