The 1868 Solar Eclipse: Some Considerations about Its Sources and Historiography

Abstract
This article aims to investigate the Thai primary sources related to the solar eclipse in 1868. There was a claim that King Rama IV had predicted the eclipse 2 years earlier. The article tries to verify if this claim corresponds with other primary sources. It is found that the Thai primary sources gave prominence to the records about time during the eclipse which might be connected to the King’s interest in accurate calculation. This tendency affected the historiography of this matter in the long run. However, to calculate the eclipse in advance was a normal practice in the 19th century, including the indication of eclipse’s path and observing locations. Western astronomers during the same period had the potential to predict the solar eclipse as well and the prevalence of almanacs made the eclipse no longer a mystery.
