บทคัดย่อ
ประวัติศาสตร์อันสวนทางจากข้อเท็จจริง (counterfactual history) หรือประวัติศาสตร์แบบ “สมมติว่าถ้า” (what if) เป็นรูปแบบวิธีการประวัติศาสตร์ในการจินตนาการถึงฉากทัศน์ทางเลือกอื่นของเหตุการณ์ที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นแตกต่างออกไปจากประวัติศาสตร์จริง ด้วยเพราะอาศัยการจินตนาการคาดเดา วิธีการดังกล่าวนี้จึงเป็นประเด็นถกเถียงมาโดยตลอดว่าคู่ควรกับการวิเคราะห์ประวัติศาสตร์อย่างเคร่งครัดหรือไม่ บทความนี้ต้องการสำรวจความเป็นมาของการถกเถียงเรื่องประวัติศาสตร์อันสวนทางจากข้อเท็จจริงที่นำไปสู่การยอมรับวิธีนี้ในวงวิชาการมากยิ่งขึ้น บทความนี้เสนอว่าช่วงราวปลายทศวรรษ 1990 เป็นต้นมา งานเขียนประวัติศาสตร์อันสวนทางจากข้อเท็จจริงได้พยายามแสวงหาและสร้างความชอบธรรมมากขึ้นโดยมีสองประเด็นสำคัญคือ การสร้างกระแสความนิยมผนวกกับการสร้างความน่าเชื่อถือทางวิชาการ การสร้างความน่าเชื่อถือนี้กระทำผ่านการสถาปนาหลักเกณฑ์เพื่อจำแนกงานที่ดีกับงานที่ไม่ได้คุณภาพออกจากกัน และยังมีการขีดเส้นแบ่งระหว่างงานเขียนแบบอาชีพออกจากงานเขียนเพื่อความบันเทิงด้วย กระบวนการดังกล่าวนี้ทำให้สถานะของประวัติศาสตร์แบบสวนทางจากข้อเท็จจริงได้รับการยอมรับเพิ่มมากขึ้น สำหรับในวงวิชาการไทยนั้นวิธีการดังกล่าวเป็นสิ่งที่ค่อนข้างใหม่ บทความนี้ยังได้สำรวจและประเมินงานเขียนในกรณีไทยเมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้อีกด้วย
