Khanom-jeen Community: Economic and Social Dynamics through Making the Kanom-jeen Recipe in the Era of B.E. 2470-2564

Abstract

This article aims to focus on the history of Khanom-jeen making, economy, and society of Khanom-jeen Village under the reflection of the context and procedure for making Kanom-jeen of the people in the community during the years 1927-2021 by using a study the telling history and observation in the real area and then analyze, compile, and synthesize into writing. The study is found that in 1957, after Mrs. Sangween Saengchai migrated to the village with procedure for making Khanom-jeen it was popular and produced for selling later until villagers brought the modern tools to produce and develop Khanom-jeen in a modern-day procedure. It caused more market competition and required high production costs. In addition, government agencies did not reach out to help people who made Khanom-jeen. As a result, the number of people who cooked Khanom-jeen had decreased. The body of knowledge from this study indicates that 1) it can be seen that Khanom-jeen has played a role in the village after the arrival of Sangwien Saengchai until it creates an identity for the village later; 2) making Khanom-jeen for selling encourages community's economy, in the past the villagers only made a farm and pots when Khanom-jeen procedure was produced in village, it became a career and main economic source of people in the community; and 3. Khanom-jeen has become a connection among the villagers to make Khanom-jeen together in various traditional festivals and after that it becomes the competition with a business relationship.
