“Mindfulness” in Dighanikaya Silakhandhavagga scripture: A study of Dhamma structure and process

Abstract

The objective of this research article is to study the structure and process of Mindfulness in the Dighanikaya Silakhandhavagga scripture. It is documentary research. Data were collected from the 9th volume of the Tipitaka, Dighanikaya Silakhandhavagga. The search word used was “Mindfulness” searched from “The Computerization of the Pali Canon and Buddhist Reference”. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as means and percentages, and qualitative data were analyzed using inductive content analysis.


The research results found that Mindfulness appears in the Dighanikaya Silakhandhavagga 108 times, 13 structures follow: 1) Maintain Mindfulness in front of you 2) Consist of Mindfulness and awareness 3) Consist of Mindfulness and awareness and being a recluse 4) Puppeni-vasanussatiyana 5) Mindful, fully aware, enjoying happiness with the body 6) Mindful, living in happiness 7) Mindful, praising only the Blessed One 8) Mindful, fully aware and purifies the mind 9) Neutrality causes pure mindfulness 10) Mindfulness does not forget 11) Mindfulness, awareness and well-being will occur 12) Mindfulness, awareness and solitude which is noble 13) Mindfulness forgets. The inductive conclusion, which is an important finding, is that there are two models of the mindfulness process namely pure and applied. The first arises only in the Fourth absorption where the mind is equanimous. Moreover, the latter must be used together with awareness in every action.
