GLONG TENG TING IN THE LANNA MUSICAL CULTURE

Abstract

This research aims to study specific characteristics and roles of the Teng Ting drum in the Lanna musical culture as well as the process of creating the Teng Ting drum. The findings reveal that the Teng Ting drum has two sides with low and loud sounds. The big side sounds “Ting” while the small side sounds “Teng.” The Teng Ting drum plays the role of the president of the band, directing the rhythm. The Teng Ting drum is called after the sound it makes when playing with the Pong Pong drum. The Teng Ting drum looks like Taphon Mon (two-faced drum). There are 4 steps of creating the Teng Ting drum as follows: 1) Selecting the right size of wood 2) Shaping the drum 3) Drilling the drum through both sides 4) Making a drum leg. Additionally, there are 7 steps of making drumheads. 1) Drying the drumhead 2) Cutting the dry drumhead into a circle 3) Stretching the drumhead 4) Scrubbing the inside of drumhead 5) Scrubbing hair of drumhead 6) Making a hole in the drumhead and coiling a wire into the circle 7) Knitting the drumhead along the pattern in the front of the drum at the surrounding edges. The process of making drumheads must be done neatly and carefully in order to get perfect and beautiful drumheads.
