CONTEXTUAL EXPLANATION OF CREATIVE COMPOSITION “LUAPOI KWAN MOAN SAKAI”

Abstract

The music composition title “Luapoi Kwan Moan Sakai” is in the Mon language which means “dancing of Mon people in Bang Sai Kai.” The composer is interested in composing Thai music with the Mon style inspired by the background and lifestyle of Mon people in Bang Sai Kai community in order to keep records of their historical events. The concept behind this composition is the aim to create 4 Thai music pieces integrated with the Mon style, designed to perform with the Mon musical ensemble called “Pi Pat Mon” and the traditional gong performance technique. The composition process involves the analysis of the scales to be played in the songs including the C D E – G A as the main scale. In some songs, the scale has been changed to G A B – D E and the note Fa is used as a canon to create the traditional Mon style. The melody patterns and composition structure are related and portray the background, history, traditions, cultures, and lifestyle of Mon people in Bang Sai Kai community and Pradittharam Temple from the past to present. The composer divided the song structure and the performance methods into each of the 4 songs which has different rhythms and melodies. Each song conveys its own melody which tells the stories of Mon people. The first song’s melody reflects the migration of Mon people to Thailand. The second song represents the settlement and lifestyle of Mon people in the past. The third song reflects the unique Mon cultures and traditions. The fourth song contains the melody which portrays the pictures of Mon recreations, Mon people as entertaining ones, and new generations of Mon. All the four songs are 12 minutes in length.
