Abstract

This research aimed to study and compare the use of teacher-made and commercial coursebooks in the online instruction of lecturers in higher education institutions in Bangkok. 33 participants were English lecturers and administrators from both autonomous and private universities selected by the use of quota and convenience sampling. Research instruments were the interview form and fieldnote. Typological analysis was used to analyzed qualitative data. Results revealed that Teacher- made coursebooks can be tailored to meet the course objectives and written based on their own experience. It can be claimed as their masterpiece and used for their academic promotion. Lecturers could adjust the language level to suit their learners as well as add Thai culture and local contexts to the coursebook they made. In addition, commercial coursebooks for advanced English courses were relatively limited, so lecturers needed to tailor-made their materials for those specific courses. Commercial coursebooks were well-designed in terms of their contents and language use including extra exercises and online supplementary. Their online system could monitor and evaluate students’ practices and attendances. The limitation of providing Thai culture and local contexts, the levels of language, prices, order, and distribution including the mutual benefits between the publishers, lecturers, and the administrators were also found in the use of commercial coursebooks.
