Guidelines to Develop Student Teachers' Desired Characteristics towards Teacher Professionalism: A Case Study of Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University

Abstract
This research aimed to study Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University student teachers’ desired characteristics from the mentor teachers’ views. The desired characteristics were classified by students’ majors. This research also aimed to study the guidelines to develop student teachers’ desired characteristics leading to teacher professionalism. The study was a survey research with a questionnaire of the student teachers’ desired characteristics. 250 students were selected by the multi-stage sampling method. The 5 rating scale questionnaire consisted of 38 items. The discrimination rate was .54 - .93, while the reliability was .98. The data was analyzed, percentage, mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA. The research findings were as follow:
- Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University student teachers’ desired characteristics from the mentor teachers’ views were satisfied as a whole. The characteristic on self-practice was very satisfied, the characteristic on work performance, the characteristic on knowledge and professional experience was satisfied.
- The comparison of Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University student teachers’ desired characteristics from the mentor teachers’ views as a whole and each aspect was significantly different at .05 level.
- The guidelines to develop Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University student teachers’ desired characteristics leading to teacher professionalism from the mentor teachers’ views were 1) designate the concrete identity of Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University student teachers 2) implant guidelines in developing desired characteristics of student teachers into teaching and learning in teacher professionalism and other related courses 3) provide training on knowledge and professional experience in organizing academic projects, curriculum development, and educational research
4) provide elective courses on promotion of desired characteristics of student teachers 5) offer extra curriculum activities or projects emphasizing on the development of desired characteristics of student teachers—the activities must be continually conducted 6) set up seminars among teacher training institutes to exchange opinions and guidelines in developing professional experience of student teachers 7) occasionally conduct research on development of desired characteristics of student teachers in order to get basic information to develop the student teachers’ professional experience.
