The Design of Sculpture to Enhance the Landscape and Develop as Tourist Attraction: A Case Study of Marsh Park in Front of Tha Chang Municipality, Tha Chang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chanthaburi Province

Abstract

           The objectives of this research were 1) to design sculptures reflecting the identity of Tha Chang Municipality and 2) to propose ways using creative sculptures to develop the area as a community tourist attraction. The research process began with a survey of a marsh park in front of Tha Chang Municipality to identify suitable locations for the sculptures and pinpoint problematic areas. Data on the community, local history, culture, and way of life were collected, along with research on creative sculpture approaches to tourism and landscape enhancement. Data analysis was conducted, leading to the conceptual framework for the sculpture design. Initial 2D sketches were created and presented to experts and relevant agencies for feedback and refinement. Finally, a 3D model was produced, and the research findings were presented to the community and related organizations.

           The research resulted in a sculpture concept reflecting the identity of Tha Chang Municipality, using the forms of elephants and durians, a local fruit. The work consisted of three sets in a group sculpture style. Set 1 featured a group of three elephant-shaped sculptures with a semi-abstract design that simplified details to emphasize aesthetic qualities. Set 2 included three durian-shaped sculptures with a semi-abstract design, also simplified in detail to highlight aesthetic qualities; these pieces were functional as seating. Set 3 comprised one durian flower-shaped sculpture, similarly semi-abstract and designed to be functional as seating. The pieces receiving the highest satisfaction ratings were: 1) the durian flower sculpture with an average rating of 4.33; 2) the group of three durian-shaped sculptures with an average rating of 4.30; and 3) the group of three elephant-shaped sculptures with an average rating of 4.19.
