Guidelines for Promoting the Roles of Sangha Administrators in Public Welfare Activities in Chonburi Province: A Case Study of Abbots' Roles during the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2019

Abstract

          This research proposes guidelines for promoting Sangha Administrators’ roles in public welfare in Chonburi Province, using a case study of abbots' roles during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. This qualitative study employed focus group interviews conducted in two sessions with 12 participants. The participants were selected through purposive sampling based on specific criteria. Data were collected using focus group discussions and analyzed through content analysis.

            The findings revealed that Sangha administrators, particularly abbots, have played a vital role in public welfare. Since assuming their position, they have taken on increasing responsibility, especially during the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019. Their contributions included providing food, water, and shelter, raising awareness about virus prevention, offering emotional support, and conducting religious rites for the deceased. Their compassionate actions served as a source of comfort for the community during this difficult time. To further promote the roles of Sangha administrators in public welfare, the study recommends establishing a systematic collaborative network among the monastic community across the province. Cooperation with government agencies, the private sector, and community organizations is also essential. Sangha administrators, particularly abbots, should serve as exemplary figures known for their moral strength and social wisdom. Challenges should be addressed in two key areas: 1) short-term problem-solving and 2) Long-term problem- prevention.
