Urban Public Space Managementfor Sustainable and Equitable Development: A Case Study of Bangkok City

Abstract

This article aims to present the management of public spaces in urban areas for sustainable and equitable development by using the concept of public space management and the equity to create interactions among people. Creating the public spaces that everyone is allowed to access freely. The public spaces do not include only parks and courtyards, but also the roads, the public corridors or the skywalks. The public space management would collaborate with the government, the private sector and civil society. Using the concepts of connectivity, multifunctional, urban acupuncture, sense of common and sense of neighborhood or localism. In addition, the development of public spaces is related to the land management over the public spaces that administrated by the fragmented Thai bureaucracy. Therefore, there must be coordination with many sectors in order not to hinder the management of public spaces. Moreover, the development of public spaces would consider the impacts that will occur on people living in the developed public spaces for building the city for all.
