การสอนภาษาอังกฤษระดับอุดมศึกษาในประเทศไทยนั้น ทักษะการอ่านภาษาอังกฤษจัดว่าเป็นทักษะที่สำคัญใน 4 ทักษะ คือ ฟัง พูด อ่าน เขียน ที่ควรปลูกฝังให้เกิดขึ้นในหมู่นักศึกษาตั้งแต่ขั้นวิชาพื้นฐานภาษาอังกฤษที่ควรเรียน เพื่อให้นักศึกษาสามารถนำทักษะการอ่านภาษาอังกฤษ ไปเป็นกุญแจไขความรู้สรรพวิชาการ และเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศในโลกยุคโลกาภิวัตน์ได้ ทันเหตุการณ์ เทคนิคการสอนอ่านมีหลายวิธีและการเดาความหมายศัพท์และข้อความจากบริบทหรือข้อความแวดล้อมจัดว่าเป็นเทคนิควิธีหนึ่งที่ควรสอนแก่นักศึกษา นักภาษาศาสตร์ประยุกต์เพื่อการสอนภาษาอังกฤษได้แบ่งประเภทวิธีการเดาความหมายศัพท์จากบริบทออกมาเป็น 5 ประเภทด้วยกัน แต่ละประเภทจะช่วยให้นักศึกษาเรียนรู้วิธีการเดาความหมายศัพท์ใหม่และข้อความในประโยคซับซ้อนได้ รวมทั้งการใช้เทคนิครวมทุกวิธีที่เรียนมา ซึ่งล้วนช่วยให้นักศึกษาค้นความหมายของศัพท์ใหม่ และข้อความที่ตนเองไม่เข้าใจความหมายได้

Abstract

Using English at the university level in Thailand requires that students have four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Among the four skills, reading is one of the most important skills for students to have.  When students have mastered this skill, they can use it to help them to understand many fields of study and to increase their knowledge of the outside world.  There are many strategies that can help students increase their reading skill, and context clues is one of them.  Applied linguists have classified this technique into five kinds of context clues, such as finding the definition clues and experience clues as well as the general sense context clues, which is the most common kind of context clue.  All kinds of context clues will help readers guess a word’s meaning or make sense of a complicated discourse.
