Principles of Speech: Buddhism and Toastmaster

Abstract

The research Principle of Speech of Buddhism and Toastmaster is aimed at 1) to study the principle of speech of Toastmaster, 2) to study the principle of speech of Buddhism, and 3) to draw a comparison between principles of speech of Buddhism and Toastmaster. This research was qualitative research through documentary research method, content analysis and synthesis, and descriptive writing. The research found that: 1) The principle of speech of Toastmaster focus on how to develop speaking skills, focus on success and standard performance by means of to develop the personality of the speaker at the same time. 2) The principle of speech of Buddhism aims at content aspect about right speech, leading to happiness and be free from suffering, which is a higher goal. and 3) Toastmaster’s speech focuses on how to speak more than content, while Buddhism’s speech focuses on the ways to mental development with moral. The Toastmaster has many formats, procedures and techniques which comply with the speaking techniques in Buddhism as well. However, the different one in Buddhist way of speaking is that there is no defined form of training like that of the Toastmaster.
