Development of Wasukri Beach as a Camping Tourist Destination

Objectives of the study are 1) to study tourists’ perspectives on their choice for camping-style destinations, and 2) to explore their demands for development of Wasukri beach as a camping destination. Quantitative and qualitative research techniques were applied. Study area was Wasukri beach in Pattani Province. The sample was 120 people who have visited Wasukri Beach. Questionnaires were applied to collect the data. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten participants, including executives of Taluban Town Municipality, municipal officials, community representatives, and entrepreneurs. The study found that the first four reasons, influencing tourists to choose camping destinations included 1) the richness of natural resources, 2) convenience in travel, 3) safety, and 4) inexpensive costs. With regard to the demands on Wasukri beach development as a camping destination, the first four demands were 1) security system, 2) clear signs and sufficient, clean, and safe public restrooms, 3) adequate parking space, and 4) clean camping areas. According to the in-depth interview results, the components influencing the development of Wasukri beach as a camping destination were the role of local leader, upskilling of local administrators, a variety of outdoor activities, and cooperation of stakeholders. Recommendations to promote camping activities on Wasukri beach consisted of the safety of life and property, improvements to infrastructure such as toilets and bathrooms, enhanced participation of stakeholders, fair distribution of benefits, and consideration for potential negative impacts on natural resources and the locals.
