Abstract

Basic music teaching includes music theory, music history, and harmonization. Commonly, an undergraduate music curriculum will include instruction of keyboard skills in which a piano or a keyboard is used as a teaching tool because the instruments can effectively guide students through both the basic music theory and music skills. A keyboard instrument can be used to teach students different genres of music such as pop, classic, or jazz, or even orchestral music thoroughly. This article delineates the foundations of playing the keyboard, history of the instrument, basic music theory, and fingering positions to prepare students for learning instruction of keyboard skills at a higher level.
