Abstract

This study pursued two primary research objectives: to investigate the current status of instructional management in undergraduate music education programs at universities in Northern Thailand, and to assess the needs for learning development among undergraduate music education students in these institutions. The research sample comprised 329 undergraduate students enrolled in music education-related degree programs at universities across Northern Thailand, selected through two-stage random sampling procedures. Data collection instruments included checklists, five-point Likert scale questionnaires, and semi-structured in-depth interview protocols, all of which demonstrated high content validity and overall reliability. General demographic data and instructional management status were analyzed using frequency distributions and percentages. Needs assessment was conducted through means and standard deviations, with priority ranking determined by the Priority Needs Index (PNI). Qualitative data were analyzed employing content analysis methodology. The research findings revealed the following: (1) The majority of students demonstrated proficiency in guitar, saxophone, and ranat (Thai xylophone) performance. Most students possessed experience in Thai traditional music, while the majority lacked experience in formal music aptitude testing. (2) Students identified three principal areas requiring the highest priority for self-development: the availability of equipment and practice facilities, knowledge and competencies in folk music instrument performance, and pedagogical management in teacher professional education encompassing curriculum design, instructional management, and learning technologies.
