Main Article Content
Abstract
The purposes of this research were to, 1)investigate teaching English and reading comprehension
ability of the students in the northeastern lower part of Thailand. The subjects consisted of 370 teachers and
390 students. They were from the northeastern lower part of Thailand, 2) develop English reading
comprehension ability based-on language experience model for Prathom Suksa students, and 3) evaluate
the efficiency of the developed model through implementation with 60 Prathom Suksa subjects selected in
one, the experimental group and two, the control group from Ban NongsangSchool in Primary Educational
Service Area Office 5. The research instruments were sets of questionnaires and reading comprehension
tests. The data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test.
The research findings were as follows : 1) For teaching English to Prathom Suksa students the teachers
mostly employed the student-centered learning approach. Picture sequencing card activity was mostly employed
and matching test was also used in measurement and evaluation. The students’ reading English
comprehension scores under the Primary Educational Service Area Office 5 was found to be at the lowest
level. 2) The developed teaching model based-on language experience approach consisted of 4 components:
1) principles, 2) objectives, 3) instructional process, and 4) evaluation. For the instructional process it included
7 steps: creating attention, recording words, exploring backgrounds, adding new knowledge, focusing
on reading skills, constructing, applying, and concluding tests. 3) The implementation of the teaching
model resulted in the learning achievement of the experimental group was higher than that of the control
group at .05 level of significance. Moreover, the post-learning achievement of the experimental group was
higher than that of the pre-learning achievement at .05 level.
