Grade 10 Students’ Scientific Argumentation in Socio-Scientific Issues

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study grade 10th students’ scientific argumentative skills in socioscientific
issues. Data were collected by a scientific argumentation skill test consisting of open-ended questions
in three socioscientific scenarios. Scientific argumentation skills consist of Claims, Warrants, Evidences, Counter
arguments and Supportive arguments. By analyzing individual answers by reading the answers and explaining
the reasons for each question from the question. Then interpret the text. Considered in conjunction with the
quality assessment criteria. Based on the argumentative skills component. The level of skill in argumentation is
very good, good, fair and improve. The researcher analyzed quantitative data with calculation of the frequencies
and percentages, and analyzed qualitative data with content analysis. The findings showed that students’
scientific argumentation skills as a whole in every scenario were at the fair level. The findings also showed that
Most of the students have expressed their claims and arguments to support good claims but lacked the skills
to find the evidence to support a credible reason, a counter arguments and supportive arguments.
