Communication Behavior and Roles of the Elderly People in the Villages of Central Northeastern Provinces

Abstract
This research objectives are 1) To analyze the behaior and roles for communications as well as the communications
network among elderly people. 2) To analyze the communications behavior and communications
leadership of elderly people in the middle part of Northeastern region. 3) To analyze the roles of communications
in the knowledge transfer, indigenous knowledge and local culture of the elderly people. (4) To analyze
the status of the elderly people from the self-awareness of the elderly people and the awareness of others
in the community. This study is carried out by the Interdisciplinary Research. Such research includes the
Qualitative Research which is the data collection from the in-depth interview of the elderly people in the middle
part of Northeastern region. Total number of interviewees in this research is 3 villagers from 3 villages. The
One-on-One Interview is the semi-structured interview. For the qualitative research, we have distributed the
questionnaire to 311 elderly persons living in 3 villages in the middle part of Northeastern region. From the
study, we have found that 1) The majority of elderly persons are open up for news. The majority of them use
the traditional media through the radios and televisions. Moreover, they are particularly interested in news
and entertainments. They view only a little of new media. But we have found that there is the utilization of lines
applications among elderly persons in the moderate degree. Housewives have the highest interpersonal communications
with their family members. 2) Elderly persons also provide the information that a large number
of people, usually come to ask for their advice on various subjects. 3) The majority of elderly persons, play
major roles in transferring the wisdom, arts, culture and ethics. But it’s in the moderate degree. They play more
roles in the arts and culture with the average percentage than other areas. They usually have the leadership
roles in constantly organizing the religious activities in the moderate degree. 4) Not many elderly persons
view their status as the elderly persons in the positive ways. They think that they are the elderly persons in
such village. They view themselves as the seniors and the indigenous wisdom of the village. Secondly, they
view themselves as that people in the village need to depend on them. However, a certain numbers of seniors
view themselves in the negative ways. They think that they are not modern and cannot keep up with changes
in the new generation of the society.
