Abstract
The thesis entitled “An Analytical Study of the Buddha’s Tasks for Propagating Buddhism in Savatthi”
served the purposes: 1) to study the Buddha’s tasks of five duties as a daily routine, 2) to study his tasks
for propagating Buddhism in the city called Savatthi, and 3) to analyze values of his tasks for propagating
Buddhism in the preceding city. It was derived from the documentary research, collecting data from such
secondary sources as the Tipitaka, commentaries, canonical texts, academic articles, and relevant researches.
Collected data were brought to analyze and results were subsequently summarized to present findings.
Results of research have found the following findings:
1. It was obvious that The Buddha highly succeeded in propagating Buddhism by laying firm foundations
for propagating his faith through regular five duties as his daily routines, for he was determined with his clear
purposes in propagating it. His tasks were well planned systematically and effectively in various domains like
managements of time, personnel and organizations. He concurrently performed his tasks and coped with
them harmoniously. That was why Buddhism had become well known and spread to various states of India
in those days because it was his great successes of effective managements of his tasks of five daily routines.
2. It was said the Buddha was greatly regarded as monarchs’ and human beings’ great teacher. His tasks of
five daily routines for propagating Buddhism was labeled as the priceless model, which we could harmoniously
apply the model, methods and rule of his dharma as our refuge to leading our everyday life. To follow the
Buddha’s footsteps, it brought about one’s effectiveness of the job and ways of their daily life to be smooth,
disciplined, which enabled them to develop their mind and address their problems by peaceful means.
3. As far as the Buddha’s tasks for propagating Buddhism in the city called Savatthi were concerned,
he was absolutely successful. It was the result of his duty performances in such many fields as propagation,
managements and administration of Sangha Order. In one aspect, the Buddha managed his time excellently
by undertaking his daily routines as the main task together with other ones. In other words, the Buddha coped
with his main tasks and secondary ones appropriately, culminating in his effective and efficient propagation
of Buddhism in the city called Savatthi, As a result, there were a number of four Buddhist adherents attaining
arahantship in Savatthai to the extent that it was labelled ‘Savatthi, the City of Arahants’. In fact, it had become
the centre of propagating Buddhism in those days.
